North Jefferson County sits on expansive red clay that moves with the seasons — swelling when it's saturated, shrinking and pulling away when it's dry. That movement is the single biggest cause of foundation and slab problems in the Gardendale area, and it's why proper subgrade preparation and reinforcement matter more here than in a lot of other parts of the Birmingham metro.
